Rainbow People - Steve Turre Arrangement

2019 was a nice year for me that had a lot of exciting turns for my musical career. To start off, I’d like to share about my gig with the One More Once Big Band featuring Steve Turre.

Leading up to this gig I had a “bucket list” arrangement to finish. Any arranger has a hypothetical “bucket list” of songs to arrange, whether they be totally realistic or imaginary. For me, I’ve always wanted to do a 3-trombone gospel band, big band arrangements featuring jazz organ, and a classical piano piece. And about a hundred others… one of those was Steve Turre’s tune Rainbow People.

The thing is, I finally got around to finishing it! I wrote the arrangement of Rainbow People which was performed live at Trumpets with the One More Once Big Band. The piece was arranged in the months after Billie’s birth. I hope to eventually get it recorded and released.

Pete McGuinness was also in the audience. Both Pete and Steve have been huge mentors of mine, probably the two biggest influences on myself as a musician. I’ve studied with them both and really enjoyed learning from these two trombone masters.
